Community Focus staff members have extensive and varied experience in civic engagement processes, public policy analysis, communications and public outreach, mediation and group facilitation.

 

Greg Wolf, Executive Director

Greg has 24 years of experience working in state and local government.  In the 1980s Greg served as the Executive Director of the Oregon Capitol Planning Commission, and as Assistant Director of the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development.  He co-founded Oregon’s dispute resolution program in 1989.

Greg has been an advocate of collaborative planning and mediation in resolving public policy issues throughout his career.  When Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber took office in January 1995, he hired Greg as his Community Development Advisor, with primary responsibility for programs in the Departments of Transportation, Economic Development, Land Conservation and Development and Housing, where he created a state and local problem solving system called the Community Solutions Team.  Greg also served as Governor Kitzhaber’s Dispute Resolution and Sustainability Advisor.

In addition to serving as Executive Director of Community Focus, Greg is Director of the National Policy Consensus Center which provides governors and policy makers with consultation and research into consensus building. 

Greg graduated from the University of Oregon Honors College with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies focusing on land use issues.

Stephanie Anderson, Associate Director

Stephanie joined Community Focus in 2003 bringing with her over 20 years of administrative experience. Stephanie has worked in both corporate and non-profit environments in a variety of administrative positions.

Stephanie manages all day-to-day operations, ensuring our program work is in alignment with our mission and strategic plan, overseeing organizational and project budgets. She is also responsible for development, grant-writing and fundraising. In addition, Stephanie facilitates six Community Outreach Resource Teams for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Prior to joining Community Focus Stephanie served as Director of Human Resources and Director of Quality at Rucker Fuller in San Francisco. In those positions, Stephanie did extensive strategic planning, meeting facilitation and team problem solving. She developed and conducted training for management on meeting planning and facilitation.

A native of Chicago, Stephanie majored in communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Malka Kopell, Founder and Senior Advisor

Malka has 25 years of experience in civic engagement and collaboration. She has worked throughout California to set up collaborative working partnerships between government, business and the civic sector, dedicated to neighborhood revitalization, downtown redevelopment, air quality, transportation, recycling, youth development, and public health. Malka also provides training and technical assistance to government agencies and nonprofit organizations, increasing community involvement through recruitment, bringing in non-traditional partners, and building and facilitating productive coalitions

In 1990, Malka founded Community Focus as a way to facilitate public policy implementation by increasing community participation. She has also served as a program officer for the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, developing and managing grants in the areas of conflict resolution and California governance reform. Malka has been profiled by San Francisco Business magazine as one of six "leaders helping to move San Francisco forward."

A trained group facilitator, Malka has also consulted in the areas of policy analysis, political campaign development, community outreach and capacity building for nonprofit organizations. Malka has a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University.

Sarah Goldberg Rubin, Senior Program Associate

Sarah has nine years of experience in bringing people together to solve problems. Her areas of expertise include large and small group facilitation, training, strategic planning and mediation.

Sarah has facilitated Spare the Air and Environmental Justice resource teams for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and provides technical assistance to tobacco control coalitions throughout California for the Center for Tobacco Policy and Organizing project.

Prior to joining Community Focus, Sarah was Project Director of the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center in Brooklyn, New York. She also worked with the Key Bridge Foundation as a case manager for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Mediation Program, sponsored by the US Department of Justice. Before that, as Executive Co-Director of the Sacramento Mediation Center, Sarah worked closely with a wide variety of community-based organizations and the court system to assist individuals and groups in communicating and resolving conflict productively.

Sarah received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Society from University of California, Santa Barbara. She has a master's degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University.

Odin Zackman, Senior Program Associate

Odin Zackman joined Community Focus in February of 2007. He brings with him over 15 years of experience in facilitation, conflict resolution and organizational and leadership development. Odin facilitates the Environmental Justice Resource Teams for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Odin has worked with the Sierra Club, the Environmental Careers Organization, the San Francisco Conservation Corps and the San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners in addition to consulting widely with other grassroots and national groups on a range of issues. Odin has developed place-based leadership education around sustainable agriculture, environmental restoration and land use and natural resources issues and has trained individuals throughout California to find new solutions to complex challenges by linking environmental issues, economic development, social equity, and civic engagement.

Odin is the recipient of a fellowship from the Salzburg Seminar in Environmental Policy and Public Dialogue. He holds a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in Politics and Environmental Studies and a master's degree from Tufts University in Agriculture, Food and Environmental Policy.
